TARA preparation resources: start free, then choose support
TARA is the Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions. UAT-UK provides free preparation materials and says additional resources are not necessary. Start with the specification, Question Guide and official practice tests. Pay for a specific unmet need, such as explanation or feedback, after trying a sample. A large question count alone does not tell you whether a resource will help. Official source (accessed 2026-09-24).
Use the official materials in a useful order
The UAT-UK preparation hub links the specification and Question Guide and describes two Pearson practice tests. It also supplies historic TSA and BMAT Section 1 material. Those older papers provide extra reasoning practice; label their origin and do not treat their scores as TARA results. Source: UAT-UK preparation materials below.
- Read the specification and make a short list of unfamiliar question types.
- Use the Question Guide to study how an answer is justified. Close the explanation and reconstruct the reasoning.
- Try an official practice test with the timing that applies to you. Record which questions you recognised from earlier study.
- Choose a small set of fresh questions for the error you made most often. Return to a mixed timed set after repairing the method.

A sample should teach a transferable move
Worked example Test the explanation
Original teaching example. A bus pass costs £18 plus £1 per journey. Single tickets cost £2.50 per journey. At what whole number of journeys is the pass first cheaper?
Why this works: For n journeys compare 18 + n with 2.5n. The pass is cheaper when 18 < 1.5n, so n > 12. The first whole number is 13. At 12 the costs are equal. The useful feedback explains why a strict inequality changes the final integer.
Why the tempting route fails: An answer that says only "13" does not help a learner who chose 12. Feedback should identify the equality boundary and ask for a fresh application.

Compare access, not marketing language
Use the same checklist for each provider sample. Alongside the public terms above, check whether explanations are available before payment and who supplies writing feedback. Ask whether original questions are distinguished from public legacy papers. The advertised features are a starting point for comparison, not proof of question quality.
- Reject an official-score promise based only on raw practice accuracy.
- Choose one specific benefit you will actually use in your remaining preparation time.
- Try the explanation on a new question. If it does not change your method, more of the same feedback may not solve the problem.
For no-calculator work, try estimating before calculating. TARA does not permit calculators, and UAT-UK does not score the Writing Task. Its test page is the source for these rules; a commercial essay score is formative feedback, not an official mark.
