Oxford Economics and Management: the TARA and the Writing Task exception

The exception, in Oxford’s words

“Candidates applying only to Oxford for Economics and Management, and not applying to any other university course that requires the TARA UAT-UK test, do not need to complete the Writing Task module.”

Every candidate is booked for the full appointment on the assumption they sit all three modules. If the exception applies, finish Problem Solving, open the Review screen with the Next or Navigator button, then choose End review and End the exam. Oxford’s History and Economics course has the same exception; no other TARA course does.

Not published: an E&M TARA score threshold or average

Oxford gives no TARA cutoff or score statistics for E&M, and UAT-UK says there is no pass mark. Any “target score” you see elsewhere is an estimate, not an Oxford figure.

For context only, UAT-UK’s technical report covers all 2,626 TARA candidates for 2026 entry, across every course: the median was 4.0 in Critical Thinking and 4.7 in Problem Solving, and the 90th percentile 6.7 and 7.0. Scores are scaled per cycle, so these do not carry over to 2027 entry, and they say nothing about who Oxford shortlisted.

Does Oxford Economics and Management require the TARA Writing Task?

Not if E&M is the only course on your UCAS form that requires the TARA. Oxford says those candidates do not need to complete the Writing Task and may finish after Problem Solving. If you also apply to a UCL course that requires the TARA, complete the Writing Task.

Can I take the TARA in January for Oxford E&M?

No. E&M has the 15 October UCAS deadline, and Oxford says applicants for those courses must book the October sitting (12 to 16 October 2026). October booking closes on 28 September 2026 at 6pm UK time.

Can I use the Writing Task time for Problem Solving?

No. Each TARA module has its own 40 minutes. The exception lets you end the test early; it does not add time to the other modules.

What TARA score do I need for Oxford E&M?

Oxford publishes no TARA pass mark, threshold or E&M score statistics. UAT-UK says there is no pass mark, and Oxford uses the test alongside the rest of your application. The only published numbers are UAT-UK's figures for all 2,626 candidates in the first cycle, which are not E&M figures.
