Sources
- UAT-UK: About the tests: TARA, Writing Task: one essay question from a choice of three, 40 minutes, 750-word limit; not scored by UAT-UK, a copy is sent to universities. Official.
- UAT-UK: TARA Question Guide (for assessment in October 2026 and January 2027), Writing Task: a short statement; explain what is meant, give a reasoned argument against, discuss the extent you agree; address all three parts. Official.
Method
- Your answer is split into paragraphs and sentences, as a reader would see them.
- Five parts are read: an explanation of the statement before any verdict, a reasoned argument against it, an example that does work for a reason, a conclusion that says how far you agree, and clear paragraphs with one claim each.
- The first three follow the three things UAT-UK's TARA Question Guide says each question asks: explain the statement, argue against it, and say to what extent you agree.
- Each part is marked on the page or work on it, with the sentence it was read from. The first part to work on becomes your one rewrite task, and the answer is read again after it.
- Length is checked against UAT-UK's 750-word limit for the 40-minute task.
Uncertainty and limits
- The reading looks for what sentences do, not whether an argument is convincing.
- An unusual but good structure can read as missing a part. Check the quoted sentence before you rewrite.
